China's energy storage network has announced that it will open its first government-funded solar farm in eastern England. The solar farm does not need government subsidies because costs are falling sharply, making renewable energy more affordable.
British officials say they need to invest in new energy to replace aging coal plants and nuclear power plants that will be shut down by the end of the decade. The government will also reduce subsidies for renewable energy.
Britain has set a target of 15 per cent of its energy needs from renewable sources, up 8 per cent from 2015.
British climate change and industry minister said, "since the past few years, the cost of solar panels and batteries have fallen sharply, so no subsidies for the first time the solar farm project and the development of clean energy an important case."
The solar farm can produce enough electricity to meet the electricity needs of 2,500 homes. The farm also has a 6-megawatt battery storage facility. The government has scrapped new energy subsidies for solar projects and onshore wind power over the past few years in an effort to curb the rise in the cost of renewable subsidies.
