What is a high-rate battery?

We often hear about high-rate batteries, so what exactly are high-rate batteries? Generally speaking, a battery that can support multiple times of its own standard discharge current is called a rate battery. The discharge rate is usually represented by the letter “C”, which is the ratio of the lithium battery’s discharge current to the battery’s nominal capacity. 1C is 1 C-rating, 2C is 2C-rating, and a battery that reaches 10C and above is called a high-rate battery.

Taking the PLB IFR26650 2500mAh high-rate battery cell as an example, 1C means that the 2500mAh battery cell is discharged with a current of 2500mA and can be discharged for 1 hour. 2C means that the 2500mAh battery cell is discharged with a current of 2500mA×2=5000mAh and can be discharged for 0.5 hours. Because the battery core supports a maximum current discharge of 50C, the 50C discharge current of the battery is: 2500mA×50=125000mA, and the 50C discharge time is: 2500mA÷125000mA×1h=0.02h.

The purpose of high-rate battery design is to store energy and release a large amount of stored energy in a short period of time. It generally refers to lithium batteries. Its working principle is to realize the charging of the battery by embedding and deintercalating lithium ions back and forth between the positive and negative electrodes. High-rate batteries are widely used in UPS, medical equipment, engine starting, industrial equipment, telecommunications 5G backup batteries, power tools, etc.

Energy Density: Gravimetric 112Wh/kg;

Cycle Life: 100% DOD ≥ 3000; 80% DOD ≥ 2000; 50% DOD ≥ 8000.
